NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – There is new information on two men arrested for trying to buy a large quantity of an ingredient used to make date rape drugs.

Narcotics detectives and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security intercepted a shipment that Joshua Baker, 33 and Charles R. Ligon, 31 were receiving from China.

The package contained more than two pounds of liquid gamma-Butyrolactone (GBL), which is a key ingredient used to make the date rape drug known as GHB.

It would have produced about 625 individual doses, each selling for about $30 on the street.

While investigating the story, News 2 learned Ligon was a server at a bar downtown and was fired from his job prior to his arrest.

Mother-of-three Kristen Smith lives a few houses down from where authorities made the bust on Dupont Avenue.

She said it concerns her that something like that happened so close to her home, but she is glad the drug is off the street.

“Knowing that is it off the streets and that they got it off before it was able to get out,” said Smith.
Baker admitted to knowing the package contained GBL.

Ligon admitted that he was going to take the chemical to another person to have it converted to the date rape drug.

Baker is due in court Friday. Ligon is set for court April 7.
