NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Sunshine Week kicked off in Nashville Sunday at the Legislative Plaza in downtown Nashville.
Sunshine Week, a national initiative, promotes the importance of open government and freedom of information.
Dozens of people showed up to listen to speeches, music and discuss legislation to make the government more open.
Supporters say when government operates in the open—in the sunshine, so to speak—everyone wins.
The group that puts on Sunshine Weeks says each year there are efforts to remove documents from public records and make it harder for citizens to understand the government works.
Their goal is to stop that practice and free information for the public.
