Witness tackles purse snatcher after woman attacked in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A man was arrested for aggravated robbery after he allegedly attacked a woman and stole her purse while she walked to her car in downtown Nashville Thursday night.

Police reported James Oliphant, 61, ran toward the woman as she was walking on Rutledge Street off Peabody Street and Hermitage Avenue around 9:30 p.m.

According to an affidavit, the woman saw Oliphant running toward her and was trying to escape to a nearby gas station when Oliphant struck her in the head.

Oliphant reportedly took her purse and began walking away.

A witness who saw the attack ran after Oliphant and tackled him to the ground, holding him until police arrived.

The woman was bruised on the back of her head but otherwise uninjured.

Her purse was later returned to her.

Oliphant was booked in the Metro jail on a charge of aggravated robbery. His bond was set at $75,000.
