Theft suspects crash into patrol car in south Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – An officer was injured in a crash early Monday morning after two men in a stolen vehicle hit his patrol car while fleeing from another officer in south Nashville.

Police told News 2 an officer noticed a vehicle driving recklessly down Carroll Street and ran the tag on the car, which showed the vehicle had been stolen.

The officer initiated a traffic stop, but the driver turned the wrong way onto University Court, which is a one-way street.

The suspect’s car hit a Sgt. Geoff Odom’s patrol car on the street. News 2 learned that Sgt. Odom received minor injuries and will be okay.

The stolen vehicle eventually came to a stop and two people inside got out and fled on foot.

Officers were able to take one of them into custody, 21-year-old Ricky Watkins.

He has the passenger in the vehicle, according to an affidavit, and attempted to hide from officers by lying down.

Watkins was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, theft and resisting arrest.

His bond was set at $85,000.

Police are still searching for the driver of the vehicle, who was described as a black male wearing a white plaid shirt and blue jeans.
