NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A 29-year-old man was shot to death Monday afternoon near Tennessee State University in Nashville.
Anthony Barbee was killed in the Village on the Green apartments on Ed Temple Boulevard around 12:40 p.m.
Metro police said shots were fired in the parking lot and Barbee fled behind a building where he collapsed.
Nearby residents provided first aid until an ambulance arrived. Barbee was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical center where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported the man responsible was driving a black Mustang. A short time later, 24-year-old Eric Freeman showed up near TSU in a black Mustang.
Freeman had been shot in the back. He was transported to Vanderbilt’s hospital as well and has since been released.
Metro police took Freeman into custody for an interview where police say he explained he was shot during an attempted robbery. He denies shooting Barbee.
Freeman, a student at TSU, has been placed on interim suspension pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing. Freeman is a first-year student at the university and just began classes two weeks ago.
No charges have been filed. Detectives continue to interview witnesses in order to piece together what happened.
