Clerk shoots suspect during robbery attempt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A suspect was shot by a store clerk during a robbery attempt late Tuesday night in Madison.

It happened at The Grand Slam around 9:45 p.m.

Police said Antonio Martin allegedly entered the store while the clerk was counting money at the register and demanded the cash.

The store clerk complied before he fired a shot at Martin who then fled the scene in a black Nissan Altima.

Martin was found a short time later in his car after he crashed into a fire hydrant. He was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for a gunshot wound to his chest. He was last listed in stable condition.

Martin will be charged with aggravated robbery upon his discharge from the hospital.

He has previous convictions out of Shelby County, police said.

The clerk does not face any charges.
