NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – On Tuesday, a 30-year-old woman donated a kidney to her adoptive father, an act of giving back after he gave her so much.
Larry Hicks and his wife adopted Brandi when she was just 6 months old.
He began having kidney problems in 2011 and began undergoing dialysis.
When the time came for a transplant, Brandi didn’t hesitate to step forward.
“I didn’t then. I still don’t now,” she told News 2.
Even though the pair doesn’t share any DNA, Brandi turned out to be a perfect match for her father.
“She tested twice and she was a perfect match,” Larry Hicks said.
Naturally there was a lot of fear for Brandi, going into the unknown, but her willingness to help her father is far stronger.
“There’s a bunch of stuff going through my brain,” she said. “I just hope he gets to feel a lot better than what he feels like now.”
Brandi told News 2 her father always provided everything she could’ve wanted, a trait she clearly picked up along the way.
Brandi was out of surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center by 12 p.m. Tuesday. Her father followed soon after, and both are in recovery doing well.
