KNOXVILLE (WATE) – Two University of Tennessee students and football players are suspected in a rape and sexual assault case, though one of the victims refuses to prosecute.

A.J. Johnson and Michael Williams are suspended from all team related activities. These are the same players a source tells WATE 6 On Your Side were being investigated for rape allegations by the Knoxville Police Department.

Police say they were called to White Avenue just before 3 a.m. Sunday morning to investigate the allegations.

Two 19-year-old women were at the scene. One told officers she had been raped by two men and the second said had been sexually assaulted at Woodlands Apartment Complex on Cherokee Woods Way.

Both women were taken to UT Medical Center as part of the investigation.

One female victim is also a UT student. The other victim is a university student from Florida. She said she was visiting a friend and did not want to press charges. She has returned to Florida.

According to KPD, once the KPD detectives have completed their investigation they will give their findings from the interviews and search of the apartment to the Knox County District Attorney’s office.

It is up to the DA’s office to determine if there is enough evidence to issue an arrest warrant or wait and present the evidence to a grand jury.

The DA’s office may also review the information and decide there isn’t enough evidence to prosecute.
