A man was arrested Thursday after he attempted to steal Christmas gifts from a car in downtown Nashville.
Police reported Johnnie Holley, 53, took a jacket and an educational video game system from a car parked in the 100 block of 17th Avenue South.
“You are trying to buy gifts for people you love and someone steals it from you. It is really not really cool,” said Dustan Doucette, who works in the area.
According to an affidavit, an off-duty officer witnessed Holley taking the items and ordered him to stop, which he did not.
When the officer attempted to place him under arrest, Holley allegedly swung at the officer, attempting to hit him in face.
Security footage of the area confirmed Holley was stealing items from the vehicle.
Holley was booked in the Metro jail on charges of burglary of a motor vehicle and assault with a bond of $35,000.
Metro police are reminding motorists to lock their cars during the upcoming busy shopping and holiday season.
They are also reminding drivers to not leave valuables out in plain view inside your vehicle and to scan the parking lot for suspicious people or cars before exiting your vehicle.
Anyone who sees anything suspicious should call police.
