The NHL has suspended Predators defenseman Anton Volchenkov for four games in response to his hit on Calgary forward Michael Ferland Friday night.

Volchenkov collided with Ferland along the boards in the neutral zone, sending his forearm and elbow into Ferland’s head. Ferland left the game and was later diagnosed with a concussion.

Because the illegal check to the head resulted in an injury and because Volchenkov has been suspended twice before for elbowing, the league felt four games was the appropriate suspension.

Defenseman Victor Bartley is expected to replace Volchenkov in the lineup. The Predators continue the six-game road trip Sunday night in Vancouver.
