A mother in Maryland is facing several charges after police said she drove while drunk and let her 10-year-old son behind the wheel.
According to WJLA, 34-year-old Veronica Jackson’s alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit when she picked up her son and 4-year-old daughter from their bus stop on Oct. 6.
When they reached the parking lot of their apartment complex, Jackson reportedly let her son sit in her lap and drive their 2005 Lincoln Navigator.
Witnesses say they were stunned by what they saw next.
“After hitting that [concrete] pole, any reasonable person would have stopped, but she was trying to drive off. That’s when she hit the cab,” said Pamela Song.
Jackson wound up hitting three vehicles total.
Her children were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities say Jackson initially blamed the crash on a vehicle malfunction, but later admitted to consuming five beers. Officers found two 12-ounce Steel Reserve beer cans in the SUV’s center console.
Jackson has been charged with attempted child abuse and reckless endangerment, along with nine traffic citations.
