A farm in west Nashville has grown from offering a Saturday morning market to a full-grown farm with its own event barn and country store.
It’s called Green Door Gourmet and it’s located on River Road off Charlotte Pike.
Owner Sylvia Ganier loves when people step onto her farm for the first time.
“They say when they step onto the farm, even though it’s only a few minutes from downtown, it feels like they have come to a whole different world,” she told News 2.
It is a different world to some in a pre-packaged world, offering fresh, organic and healthy alternatives.
“We make sure we are taking care of people’s health and making sure we’re helping to feed Nashville. So much food comes from outside our community,” Ganier said.
The 350-acre farm is doing their part to move food closer to home, farm-to-table style.
Their country store is a cooperative store, which means 75% of the goods are local, 20% are regional, and the last 5% is smattering, which means it’s a little bit of everything from everywhere.
Green Door Gourmet grows an amazing variety of produce and flowers, right here in Tennessee soil.
Ganier said watching the families who visit grow and learn is as satisfying as plants maturing in the field.
“Wonderful produce is great; eating healthy is fantastic, but those families, actually watching those children grow up and getting hands on information and playing with those vegetables and enjoying being on the farm, that’s what it’s all about,” she explained.
The farm offers a subscription program called CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture, where locals can get the best of the farm in a box each week.
They also supply produce for 22 different restaurants in the area.
