SAN DIEGO, CA – A concerned puppy sat by a cheetah cub’s side while he underwent leg surgery this week.
The dog, named “Raina,” nuzzled and licked the cheetah cub “Ruuxa” as he was sedated for surgery at the San Diego Zoo’s Veterinary Medical Center, NBC San Diego reports.
The Rhodesian ridgeback puppy was by the cub’s side for the entire procedure, and has stayed near Ruuxa’s crate while he’s recovering from the anesthesia with his two front legs wrapped in bandages.
Ruuxa needed surgery on his legs due to a growth abnormality.
The zoo told NBC San Diego, “Raina appeared very concerned about Ruuxa when she saw he was sleeping and she couldn’t wake him. She licked him and nuzzled him, and when he awoke, she lay with him and seemed very content to know her cheetah was OK.”
The Rhodesian ridgeback puppy and the cheetah have been BFF ever since the zoo paired them together through their animal ambassador program. Ruuxa was rejected by his mother so Raina came in to help the cub learn about the outside world.
The pair should be back to their normal play-time routine soon, when Ruuxa is fully recovered.
