A clown at the Delta Fair in Memphis was fired after he reportedly made racial remarks to a family this past weekend.
Tanya Jones said she overheard someone over a loud speaker say, “Hey nappy head!”
She and Mario Curry looked at each other, puzzled, because they didn’t know who the clown was talking to.
Then it became clear.
“He was like, ‘Yeah, I’m talking to you, Sheneneh. You look unbe-weave-able,’” Jones explained.
It was the clown at the dunk tank, and it didn’t stop there.
Curry said the man continued making comments such as, “You got a cheap weave. You must have got it from the Dollar Tree.”
The two were there with their family, two sisters, a brother-in-law, and three children between the ages of eight and 10, and shocked at what they were hearing.
“I’ve never experienced anything like that before. I was really humiliated,” said Jones.
“I feel really disrespected, you know, because I’m out here with my wife and my children,” added Curry.
The family said they understand the clown is hurling insults to lure people over, and there’s even a sign explaining that’s what happens, but they believe he took it too far.
“I understand the premise of the dunk. You’re trying to coax people to come over. I felt the comments were disrespectful as well as racist,” Jones explained.
The Delta Fair agreed.
The clown was fired and the family entrance fees of more than $100 were refunded.
“We try to promote the Delta Fair as clean, safe and family-friendly, and then when you have this guy making comments,” the president, Mark Lovell, said, “We try to make the comments funny, but without sexual connotations or without racial connotations.”
A new clown has since taken over duty at the dunk tank.
