TIMELINE OF EVENTS: Woodland Hills escape

At 11 p.m. on Monday, September 1, 2014, 32 juveniles escaped from the Woodland Hills Youth Development Center on Stewarts Lane in Nashville. Two dozen teens escaped two days later. Below is the timeline of events:

Monday, Sept. 1, 2014
10:30 p.m.
– Shift change at Woodland Hills Youth Development Center
11:00 p.m. – 32 juveniles escape through a fence

Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014
12:39 a.m.
– Metro police are notified of the escape
1:30 a.m. – 2 juveniles in custody, 30 still on the run

4:00 a.m. – 4 in custody, 28 still on the run
4:30 a.m. – 7 in custody, 25 on the run

5:00 a.m. – 15 in custody, 17 on the run

6:00 a.m. – Police helicopters up actively assisting in search
7:30 a.m. Possible sighting, 3 people reportedly attempt to steal items from Walmart on Dickerson Pike
8:00 a.m. – 18 in custody, 14 on the run
8:30 a.m. – 22 in custody, 10 on the run
9:00 a.m. – 23 in custody, 9 on the run
9:55 a.m. – 24 in custody, 8 still on the run
10:00 a.m. – Crews check the entire perimeter of fence at DCS facility to make sure it’s secure
10:25 a.m. – DCS creates website to provide updates on the escape
10:40 a.m. – Metro police spokesperson Don Aaron holds news conference
11:00 a.m. – Crews begin making repairs to fence from where teens escaped
11:20 a.m. – Police release names, mug shots of 8 teens still on the run

11:30 a.m. – Former Woodland Hills employee talks with News 2 and blames the escape on poor staffing
11:55 a.m. – DCS, police announce news conference at 2 p.m.

1:05 p.m. – News 2 learns that the 8 teens still at large have no criminal histories in Nashville, according to county clerk’s website

2:05 p.m. – DCS holds news conference

2:35 p.m. – DCS news conference concludes
4:35 p.m. – DCS releases list of convictions for each of the 8 students who remain at large

5:30 p.m. – 25 in custody, 7 still on the run


Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014
 

5:00 a.m. – Police still searching for 7 on the run

11:30 a.m. – DCS says 2 officers injured during escape, minor injuries
12:55 p.m. – DCS says 33rd teen escaped but didn’t make it off property

1:25 p.m. – 26 of 32 in custody, 6 still on the run

4:00 p.m. – DCS says there are 26 staff vacancies at Woodland Hills, 14 for correctional officers

11:10 p.m. – 5 teens escape building at Woodland Hills

Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014
1:00 a.m. – Metro police, THP surround grounds at Woodland Hills, 6 youths now outside in courtyard, officers are trying to talk the teens back inside the building

1:30 a.m. – Seven teens now outside building, Metro police, THP officers remain around the perimeter, a police helicopter is circling overhead
2:00 a.m. – DCS says some of the teens were also involved in Monday’s escape
2:30 a.m. – Approximately 20 teens are now outside, some are rioting, breaking windows, spraying extinguishers; two guards injured

3:00 a.m. – Situation under control at Woodland Hills

4:10 a.m. – 10 ringleaders transported by bus to juvenile detention center in Rutherford County 
4:45 a.m. – DCS holds news conference on latest breakout
5:00 a.m. – DCS says all 24 youths were handcuffed; the remaining 14 were taken back into Woodland Hills

5:20 a.m. – DCS says they will look to change long-standing policies like the one that prevents them from locking student room doors;  DCS Commissioner pledges to make security adjustments; 6 youth still at large following Monday’s escape

9:55 a.m. – DCS says 10 ringleaders were actually taken to the Middle Tennessee Juvenile Detention Center in Columbia
