A Franklin man was arrested late Tuesday night after officers were flagged down on Downs Boulevard by a woman who had been beaten.

Police said the 21-year-old victim was assaulted by her husband, Jesus Perez-Ayala, inside their apartment.

During the assault, Ayala allegedly threw the victim down onto a bed and choked her until she lost consciousness.

He is accused of then stepping on her chest, elbowing her in the face, and striking the woman in the face and leg with a belt.

The couple’s six-day-old baby was lying on the same bed when the mother was attacked.

Franklin police said Ayala then broke the woman’s cell phone to prevent her from calling 911.

Fortunately, she was able to escape with her child.

Officials transported her to a nearby hospital for treatment and arrested Ayala a short time later.

He is being held on $25,000 bond on charges of aggravated assault and preventing a 911 call.

His court date was set for September 11.
