Justin Hunter had four receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns in Friday night’s loss to the Saints, proving he is not “Just another guy.”
The moniker was shortened to “JAG” and placed on the back of Hunter’s practice jersey last week. Titans coaches used the stunt to motivate the young receiver and it seemed to do the trick.
“He definitely wasn’t a JAG last night,” says head coach Ken Whisenhunt.
Hunter’s first touchdown of the night was an impressive grab over a defender in the corner of the end zone in the first quarter. The second quarter was highlighted by a pass across the middle from Zach Mettenberger that Hunter turned into a 64-yard touchdown reception.
Whisenhunt said Hunter earned his name back, but that doesn’t mean he’s completely off the hook.
“I think you are seeing just a glimpse of what he can be,” stated Whisenhunt. “What he did last night, let’s not make the mistake and think he’s, by any stretch, close to what he can be.”
Hunter said he is glad the nickname is off the jersey, but he will not forget why it was there in the first place.
“They expect a lot out of me and everything,” he said. “But it’s cool. I love the pressure and all of that. I still got a long way to go. I still got to go back to Tennessee and go to work.”
As for the JAG jersey? Whisenhunt said it has not gone very far.
“It’s hanging in his locker. I don’t think he will have it out a practice. Maybe as a little reminder for him.”
