FRANKLIN, Tenn. – A Franklin man charged in the stabbing death of his father earlier this year has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.
The ruling was made during a bench trial for Daniel Cantrell Tuesday morning. Cantrell was arrested after his father, 65-year-old Oliver Cantrell Jr., was found with multiple stab wounds inside the family’s home on Heathrow Hills Drive in Brentwood on the evening of April 2, 2014.
Daniel Cantrell’s wife placed the call to 911 after returning from work and finding her father-in-law pale, bleeding and unresponsive.
Following his arrest, Daniel Cantrell admitted that he had stabbed his father twice in the heart. Oliver Cantrell was a local architect who worked with LifeWay Architecture in Nashville for more than a decade.
A forensic psychiatrist who testified Tuesday morning was the only witness to take the stand.
