With the tax free holiday weekend in a few days and large crowds expected, Metro police officers are stepping up their patrols at area shopping centers to make sure shoppers have a crime free experience.

In addition to the foot patrols, the Department’s Horse Mounted Patrol Unit will be on hand at Opry Mills Mall in Donelson this weekend to assist with the large crowds and deter crooks from taking advantage of shoppers.

The mounted horses, which are used at many Titans games and big events such as CMA Fest in downtown Nashville to help with crowd control, are also a tremendous tool to keep crooks at bay because of their height and visibility.

“The good thing about us is that the bad guys could see us as well as we can see the bad guys,” explained Officer Tim Edwards. “We can see anything that’s going on for quite a large area around us.”

Shoppers at the mall Wednesday ahead of the weekend crowd said they appreciate the extra efforts by police.

“I think that their presence will hopefully deter a lot of folks from making those bad choices and breaking into care and such,” shopper Allie Harper said.

Mall-goer Danielle Falconer added, “I think that any increase surveillance it probably a good thing”

All the horses that will be used this weekend are Tennessee Walking horses and are all donated.

Tax free weekend begins Friday and continues through Sunday.
