Tennessee head football coach Butch Jones says the Tennessee are alumni “are the program.”
Jones was in Nashville Tuesday speaking before a packed house of Big Orange fans at the Wildhorse Saloon.
Depsite winning only five games in his only season at Tennessee Jones has done something that Derek Dooley and Lane Kiffin did not, earn the respect of the former players and coach Johnny Majors.
Jones has an open door for the former players and they’ve embraced the invitation.
This summer Peyton Manning, Albert Haynesworth and Chad Clifton are just some of the former stars who have spent time in Knoxville and even worked with the team.
Jones says it’s vital.
“Well, it’s all about our former players. You know, they’re kind of the ones who built the program with their sweat equity. It’s all about them, they are the program. So, to be able to have these individuals comes back is great and that’s the power of Tennessee. That’s the great tradition that we have, but also the affinity our former players have,” he explained.
Tennessee opens practice Friday in Knoxville.
