Quick thinking by a police officer and the hard work of a K-9 are to thank for the arrest of a suspected church burglar Friday morning.

A Metro police officer heard an alarm going off at the Temple Beyth El on Brick Church Pike and walked around the building to check it out.

Behind the building, the officer noticed a ground-level window that was cracked open. When he walked up to the window, a man climbed out and took off running.

The officer chased the man, but lost him in a field. The officer then called upon man’s best friend, Storm.

Storm, who recently joined the force after a K-9 named Sparky retired, quickly found the suspect, 50-year-old Darryl Whiteside, lying down in the field.

Church members will go inside the building with police later on Friday to determine if anything was damaged or stolen.

Storm’s handler says it’s obvious he’s already doing a great job despite his short time on the force.

Whiteside is charged with burglary and evading arrest. He was booked into the Metro jail on $15,000 bond.
