A family of three is thankful to be alive after they almost boarded the Malaysian Airlines jet that was shot down Thursday.

According to ABC 7, the couple was traveling with their baby and was trying to get home to Amsterdam.

They usually fly with Malaysia Airlines, but there was only one seat left on Flight 17, so they booked a later flight on KLM.

The couple was shocked to learn that the jetliner was shot down by a missile near the Russia-Ukraine border, killing all 298 people on board.

“You get this sick feeling in the pit of your stomach,” the husband said.

“We were supposed to be on that flight and it’s obvious that something is watching over us and said, ‘No, don’t get on that flight,’” explained the wife.

The husband said he is not nervous about riding another plane home because everyone is on high alert after Thursday’s crash.

They said they are very sorry for the victims and their families.
