A woman was robbed at gunpoint early Monday morning near the campus of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro.
Police said the victim awoke at her home on Yearwood Avenue near the South Rutherford Boulevard lot on MTSU’s campus to find a robber pointing a handgun in her face.
The suspect told the woman to be quiet before fleeing with $300, her identification from her purse and her laptop.
Neither the victim nor her four roommates were injured.
Sheriff’s deputies, Murfreesboro police and MTSU police set up a perimeter to search for the suspect but were unsuccessful.
Police tracked the suspect to MTSU’s campus but the track ended on Greenland Drive.
News 2 spoke to the victim, now identified as Jade Lehman, who said the situation was very frightening.
“We’ve been putting off getting a screw driver from our friends or from Walmart,” she explained. “The door knob was hanging and he definitely saw that, and pushed it right open.”
Lehman said it was easy for the gunman to gain access to the house, but that she’s now her lesson the hard way.
“I will never fall asleep with my door unlocked. You need to lock your door all the time because you never know what can happen at night,” she said.
The suspect is described as a black man of average build. He was wearing black clothing and a black bandana over his face.
