Hundreds of thousands of people undergo liposuction each year to get rid of stubborn belly fat, but there’s another procedure that promises to do the same thing without the downtime and risks of surgery.

It may sound too good to be true, but many patients and doctors say it works.

It’s called Coolsculpting and it’s a non-invasive procedure that freezes the fat away.

“I think people just don’t have the time to take off for a surgical procedure. Some people have a little fear about needles, downtime and anesthesia and so it really fits in the lifestyles to not have to be down at all,” said Dr. Jeffrey Marvel of Marvel Cosmetic Surgery.

Amanda Peralta, 28, recently had the procedure done at Dr. Marvel’s office.

The Nashville nurse admits she has considered having plastic surgery before.

“When I lost a lot of weight, I had a lot of extra skin, so I thought about different procedures, such as a tummy tuck or a body lift,” Peralta told News 2.

But after considering the risks of surgery, Peralta said she decided to try Coolsculpting instead.

“As a nurse you think of all the different things that could go wrong. You weigh your options and this seemed to be the best option for me,” said Peralta.

During the procedure, the fat and skin is pulled into a suction device which then freezes the tissue.

It damages the fat without harming the skin. Those fat cells then die and the body naturally gets rid of them over time.

The procedure takes about an hour.

“When it first comes on it’s a little uncomfortable because it’s sucking your skin in there, but after it gets cold you don’t feel anything,” Peralta told News 2.

While Coolsculpting may be a great option for some, it’s not for everyone.

“This is really for folks who have a minimal amount of excess weight. They exercise, they diet, eat correctly, but they have stubborn areas that they just can’t seem to get rid of with exercise and dieting alone. They’re really the ideal candidates,” said Dr. Marvel.

There is no downtime and you can go back to work the same day.

Peralta has had two treatments and says so far she is pleased with the results.

Coolsculpting is FDA approved. The final results can take a few months to see.

The price ranges from $650 for a small area of fat to over $1,000 for a larger area per treatment.
