A 31-year-old bride battling Stage IV colon cancer married her long-time boyfriend at a charity event in California over the weekend.

Alma Fragoso married Juan Franco Saturday in a ceremony paid for by the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, ABC News reported.

Wearing a short white wedding dress with a veil and tiara Fragoso celebrated with hundreds of friends, family members and other cancer survivors.

“They were able to see me smile and I hadn’t seen me smile in a long time,” she told ABC News, adding. “In my mind I was like, ‘Dear God, please make me beautiful.’ When I saw the wedding pictures, I said, ‘I am so beautiful.’”

Fragoso said she was initially diagnosed with cervical cancer while pregnant two years ago.

Following giving birth to a healthy son, she went into remission but was diagnosed with colon cancer during a routine checkup.

“It happened so fast,” she recalled. “It’s so hard to see how a cancer spreads.”

Despite stopping treatment due to its advanced stage, Fragoso said she is not giving up.

She added that her wedding ceremony was a dream come true and that she hopes her story will raise awareness for the American Cancer Society.
