Only seconds after the Vanderbilt baseball team made history in Omaha, right-handed pitcher Brian Miller made a memory of his own.
The Franklin, Tennessee native surprised his girlfriend, Megan Bonds, with an engagement ring on the field.
Miller told News 2 he was almost sure she would say yes.
“And I just thought, she can’t say no if there’s that many people around,” said Miller.
It was not an impromptu decision to propose.
Before the first game of the season, Miller made a bet with a teammate: if the Commodores win the College World Series, he proposes to his girlfriend.
Even if they did not make it all the way, he planned to ask her hand in marriage this summer.
But as Vanderbilt got closer to the finals, Miller picked out a ring and hoped he would have to make good on the bet.
On Wednesday night, as Vandy baseball fans got what they have been waiting more than 120 years for, Miller got two memories of a lifetime.
“I will never forget that night.”
There is no word yet on when the two might tie the knot.
