A man who spent years fighting for the country in World War II has finally received his high school diploma decades later.

Dennis Baca left school in 1944 and never received his diploma from Albuquerque High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico because he was in a rush to enlist.

The school, however, honored Baca with his diploma 70 years later last Thursday, according to ABC News?.

Baca, now 89 years old, even donned a traditional cap and gown during the ceremony led by the current principal of the school.

The school’s superintendent, Winston Brooks, said Baca is an inspiration for all current students.

“This man and his family are such good role models for students and all of us today because they believe that education is important enough to come back all these years later to receive their high school diploma,” Brooks said in a statement on the Albuquerque Public Schools Web site.
