Man injured in Knoxville steel mill explosion dies

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – A steel mill employee has died of injuries he suffered last month in an explosion that also injured five other workers.

Gerdau Ameristeel spokeswoman Kimberly Selph said in an email that the mill in north Knoxville is down until Wednesday morning to allow employees time “to process the news and grieve.”

The employee’s name was not released, but Gerdau said he died early Tuesday.

The statement said the company has been working with authorities to determine what caused the explosion and expects the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration to release a final report within the next two months.

The mill uses an electric arc furnace to turn scrap metal into steel.

The five other injured workers were treated at a local hospital and released after the May 15 explosion.
