The rebuilding of Tennessee football may have just taken its first big hit under Butch Jones.
Jones says red-shirt freshman quarterback Riley Ferguson is not expected to be with the Volunteers this season.
No reason has been given for Ferguson’s departure other than possibly wanting to play closer to home.
There’s been no official word from Tennessee, but Jones revealed the news in several different interviews Tuesday in Destin, Florida where the SEC Meetings are underway.
Ferguson was originally a Derek Dooley recruit, but signed on in Butch Jones’ first recruiting class at Tennessee.
If he does leave, the Volunteers would be down to only Justin Worley, Nathan Peterman and Joshua Dobbs at quarterback.
The Vols failed to sign a QB in last years’ stellar recruiting class.
