Two elementary school students in Brooklyn, New York were arrested and charged after they allegedly poisoned their teacher.
ABC News reports the 9 and 12 year old students poisoned the teacher by putting rat killing chemicals in her water bottle.
The teacher, who has yet to be identified, took the bottle to the principal’s office Monday and went to her doctor.
The New York City school system said Wednesday the teacher was at home recovering.
Authorities confirmed to ABC the children were arrested after the parent of another student called the school to inform them her child witnessed a student putting something in the teacher’s water bottle.
Police stated the poison was placed in the bottle by the 9-year-old, who also procured the rat poison, with the assistance of the 12-year-old.
They also said the boys reportedly wanted to see what would happen to the teacher.
The children were charged with criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and attempted assault.
Authorities said they will be treated as juveniles.
“We are greatly relieved that the teacher is recovering and we continue to closely monitor this situation,” the Department of Education said in a statement. “Ensuring the safety of our entire schools community is our priority, and while this matter is still under investigation, we will take swift and appropriate action.”
