Vanderbilt survived a late push from the Tennessee Volunteers to win the SEC tournament opener 3-2 Tuesday morning in Hoover, Alabama.
The Commodores got out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on back to back singles from Xavier Turner and Bryan Reynolds followed later by an RBI single from Vince Conde.
Tennessee cut the lead to one in the top of the second on an RBI single from Vincent Jackson. Derek Lance followed later with a single to center but a Vandy error allowed Tennessee to tie the game at 2-2.
Vandy secured the lead in the bottom of the inning as Rhett Wiseman led off with a triple to right-center field and scored later on a RBI single from Ro Coleman.
Tennessee managed to make things interesting in the ninth as Nick Senzel ripped a leadoff double to put the tying run in scoring position. Vandy Closer Carson Fulmer made things even tougher with a balk to allow Senzel to take third with no batters out.
The Vanderbilt defense managed to get out of the threat, giving Fulmer his team-high 10th save of the season.
Vanderbilt advances to take on LSU Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
