A 30-year-old mother was arrested Saturday for beating her young daughter with a wooden stick.

According to an affidavit, neighbors called police after they witnessed Shatika Terrell beating the 12-year-old girl outside their apartment.

Witnesses reported Terrell initially hit her daughter in the face and head as the child held on to a railing in the apartment’s breezeway.

Terrell allegedly continued to beat the child further with a wooden stick after she refused to take her hands off the railing.

The 12-year-old girl suffered injuries to her face, head and right wrist. An arrest report says she was bleeding from her nose, lips and side of her head.

Once officers arrived on the scene, police say Terrell told them she only “spanked” the child with a belt and her hand.

Witnesses stated Terrell also asked her daughter to change her bloody shirt before police arrived.

When asked about the shirt by officers, Terrell allegedly said her daughter threw it in a dumpster outside. When pressed again, Terrell reportedly admitted to hiding the shirt and wooden stick in a hallway closet.

She was arrested and booked into the Metro jail on charges of aggravated assault and tampering with evidence.

Terrell faces an additional charge of possession of a controlled substance after police say they found a small amount of marijuana inside her home.

Her bond was set at $40,000.
