NASHVILLE- The St. Louis Rams made history Saturday by drafting Michael Sam as the 249th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Sam is the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL.
Sam came out via national media outlets in February, causing many to wonder if it would affect his draft status.
The former Missouri defensive tackle was named SEC Co-defensive Player of the Year after the 2013 season.
After learning he was drafted by the Rams, Sam took to Twitter to show his excitement. He tweeted, “Thank you to the St. Louis Rams and the whole city of St. Louis. I’m using every ounce of this to achieve greatness.”
