A Siegel High School teacher was charged Friday with one count of sexual battery by an authority figure.
Detectives charged Larry Mathews, 39, of Smyrna, after he allegedly inappropriately touched a student at school Thursday.
Rutherford County Schools’ spokesman James Evans said Mathews is a non-tenured criminal justice teacher at the school.
He passed all necessary background checks before he was hired in 2012.
“We are shocked and concerned about the charge,” Evans said. “We are cooperating fully with the sheriff’s office during the investigation.”
The school district has suspended Mathews without pay pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
He was booked into Rutherford County jail on $3,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 8.
