A man has been arrested for trying to strangle a Memphis police officer.

According to The Commercial Appeal, the incident happened at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon as Officer Jennifer Robinson approached a man who was walking along the street and hitting moving cars.

Once confronted, Alphonzo Johnson reportedly reached into Robinson’s police car and put his hands around her neck as he threatened to kill her.

Robinson reached for her gun as she called for assistance. Johnson then stated, “I’m going to take your gun and kill you.”

A passerby stepped in to help Robinson wrestle Johnson to the ground. They kept him pinned down until backup officers came and took him into custody.

Johnson has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and resisting arrest. He remains behind bars on $200,000 bond and is scheduled for a court appearance Monday.
