A dog that was lost during Superstorm Sandy in New Jersey has been reunited with his owners.
According to ABC News, the terrier-pit bull mix named Reckless escaped from the family’s backyard during the storm in October of 2012.
The family of five searched for months, but never found him.
On Thursday, they went to the Monmouth County SPCA to get a new dog as a surprise for their daughter’s tenth birthday.
When they arrived they saw Reckless in one of the cages.
“We’re all so happy to have him back, “Chuck James said. “Thank God for no-kill shelters because every time they kill an animal, it’s somebody’s friend who might be lost. Thank God they didn’t put him down because this would have been a different story.”
A friend sent a picture of Reckless with the family to the pound to prove that he belonged to them.
SPCA officials said Reckless was picked up as a stray and now has a microchip.
The family, who is living in a hotel while their storm-damaged home is repaired, took a camping trip this weekend to celebrate Reckless’ return.
