A pregnant woman was transported to a Nashville hospital after she was violently attacked by a man as she was walking to the store early Thursday morning.

The victim, who is five months pregnant, told police Christopher Hatcher allegedly approached her in an alley at 16th Avenue North and Buchanan Street before a verbal dispute broke out.

Hatcher is said to have choked the woman from behind, causing her to pass out, as the dispute escalated.

When she regained consciousness, Hatcher is alleged to have punched her in the face, threw her to the ground and kicked her in the stomach.

The woman sustained a cut to her lip, possible bruising to the back of her head and broken teeth, among other injuries.

Police said Hatcher flagged them down after the attack, claiming he has been assaulted by the victim.

Officers determined the alleged injuries Hatcher sustained actually occurred during a previous unrelated altercation.

Hatcher was taken into police custody and is charged with aggravated assault.

The victim’s condition was not immediately released.
