Nashville mom arrested for DUI with children in car

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – A Nashville mother was arrested late Saturday night after allegedly falling asleep in a parked car while intoxicated with her two children inside.

Andrea Sweeney, 26, is facing multiple charges, including two counts of child neglect and driving under the influence with a child, after police found her in the 2100 block of Cliff Drive in the Bordeaux area of Nashville.

When officers arrived to the scene, they noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from the vehicle and witnessed Sweeney’s 9-year-old son in the driver’s seat with the keys in the ignition.

He reportedly told police the car ran out of gas and his mom got tired, so they pulled over to the side of the road.

Sweeney was found asleep in the backseat with her 7-year old daughter snuggling up to her for warmth.

Officers stated both children appeared to be cold and improperly dressed for the weather.
Authorities woke Sweeney up and said she appeared to be unsteady on her feet.

According to the affidavit, she told police she had been drinking all day and an empty 40-ounce bottle of Natural Ice beer was located inside the vehicle.

The kids told police they were parked for two to three hours before officers arrived.
Monday, Sweeney’s mother Betty told News 2 she was shocked to learn what happened.

“That’s not my daughter what can I say? It’s just not the same,” she said, adding, “I couldn’t believe it. My child? And my grandkids? You know? I just couldn’t believe it. It was unbelievable.”

Andrea’s uncle, Terry Dickson, told News 2 her behavior is out of character but says she’s a single mom and just lost her job last week.

He hopes others learn from happened.

“This should be pretty much a reminder to them that this could happen to them also because if you are out there drinking and driving you need to stop it because you could be on Channel 2 News as well,” Dickson said.

The children were not seriously injured and are now in Betty Sweeney’s care.

Her daughter was booked into the Metro jail where she remained more than 24 hours later on $13,000 bond.

Sweeney’s criminal history includes criminal trespassing, aggravated assault, driving with a suspended license and public intoxication.
