Mt. Pleasant police have captured a man after he led officers on a pursuit that ended at a Columbia apartment complex.

The chase started just after 5 p.m. Monday when callers reported seeing a suspected drunk driver in Mt. Pleasant.

A be-on-the-lookout was issued for the vehicle and police spotted the car a short time later on North Main Street.  According to police, the driver, Rodney Bowie, 41, was swerving across the center line and into oncoming traffic.

An officer stopped Bowie just north of the Maury County Regional Airport but when he walked up to the vehicle, Bowie hit the gas and sped away.

Multiple officers were involved in the chase, which ended about a mile away outside the Polk Arms Apartments after Bowie collided with an unmarked police SUV.

Officers said there were several people standing outside that could have been hit.

“It could have been very dangerous.  Fortunately, we took him off the road,” said Capt. Charles Crosslin.

Bowie was arrested and placed in the back of the police cruiser where officers say he continuously hit his head on the back windows, damaging them.

He was not hurt but is charged with felony vandalism, driving on a revoked license, his second offense, and DUI.

Bowie was booked in the Maury County jail.
