A school bus struck and killed a six-year-old boy outside a northwest Georgia elementary school Monday morning.
It happened around 7:20 a.m. at Chattanooga Valley Elementary in Flinstone, about 10 miles south of Chattanooga, Tenn.
Investigators said the child got off the school bus and was hit when it moved forward. The boy was killed immediately, authorities said.
According to WTVC-TV in Chattanooga, grief counselors and comfort dogs were called to the school to help students and staff members cope with the tragedy.
WTVC-TV reported several parents picked up their children and took them home for the day.
“Today is just the first day of many long days for that family,” Sheriff Steve Wilson said.
It is unclear if the bus driver will face charges.
The child's identity was not immediately released.
