A hot air balloon crashed into live power lines in Indiana over the weekend, moments after a man on board proposed to his girlfriend.

Stephen Richardson told ABC News he and his now-fiancé Brandi Runyan were snapping pictures minutes before the accident.

“I don't know if it was wind conditions or what,” he recalled. “We knew we were going down and we saw the power lines coming right at us.”

He continued, “When we hit, the pilot told us to get down. All we saw were sparks all around us, and felt the sparks. We were all in shock and fear.”

After striking the lines, Richardson said there was an explosion of light, and black smoke before the hot air balloon crashed into an open field and completely caught on fire.

Despite the chaotic scene, the newly engaged couple said they don't consider the terrifying moment as a bad omen.

“She wanted a story and she got one,” Richardson said. “Especially after this, we'll just keep it simple.”

The FAA is investigating the incident. None of the seven passengers on-board the hot air balloon was seriously injured.
