The Tennessee Volunteers could be looking for a new basketball coach. Reports are Marquette officials met with Vols head coach Cuonzo Martin Sunday and there is significant interest from the Golden Eagles.
Martin's buyout makes his departure much easier starting Tuesday. If Marquette hired him Monday his buyout would be $2.6 million, but as of April 1 that number drops to just $1.3 million.
In his third season, Martin led the Volunteers to 24 wins including three in the NCAA tournament as Tennessee advanced to the Sweet 16.
Just before the Volunteers tournament run began, 36,000 UT fans signed a petition to fire Martin and bring back former head coach Bruce Pearl, who is now the head coach at Auburn.
Martin also did not receive a contract extension after the 2012-13 season.
Duke assistant Steve Wojciechowski is also being mentioned as a candidate at Marquette.
