A pair of pen pals who have been writing to each other for more than 40 years met for the first time Friday.
In 1972, when Pat Chandler was just 13-years-old living in Virginia, she began writing to Julie Lawson who lives in England.
After exchanging hundreds of letters, the two-longtime friends decided to meet face-to-face.
“[I'm] excited, nervous and thrilled. Just lots of things going through my mind,” Chandler said.
“I never though this day would come, to be honest,” Lawson said.
Despite growing up on two different continents, the women said they shared many major life events with each other through their letters and now through social media sites, such as Facebook.
“When you start writing at 13-years-old and you're still going at 54 this year, it's a long time to be writing,” Lawson said.
Chandler said she paid $1 in her eighth grade class for the address of her pen pal.
