A police dog from California has been reunited with his partner and best friend after he was shot in the line-of-duty last week.

Bruno was shot after he located a wanted suspect at an Anaheim apartment complex, ABC News reported.

The German shepherd quickly returned to his partner's side and barely made a sound, despite bleeding profusely.

“It was a horrific thing to have to watch,” recalled Officer R.J. Young. “My entire world came crumbling down in the matter of a second.”

Bruno was rushed to a nearby animal hospital where he underwent hours of surgery.

The bullet round exited his lower jaw before reentering his body though his chest cavity, just one inch away from his heart.

Bruno lost part of his lung. The bullet was not able to be removed due to the trauma of the surgery.

Despite the seriousness of his injuries, seven-year-old Bruno  is expected to make a full recovery.

Young told ABC News he now plans to adopt Bruno and take over all of his medical expenses.

“I know a lot of people may not understand,” Young's wife Rachel said, adding, “They may say it's just a dog, but this dog went with him everywhere. The dog spends more time with him than I spend with him.”

Bruno is credited for saving the lives of three officers when he was shot last week.
