A Middle Tennessee family credits a cell phone app for helping police track down an armed fugitive following a carjacking last week.

Metro police shot and killed Aaron Smith Jr., 51, at a West End shopping center Friday after authorities said he carjacked DeAnn Goetzinger at gunpoint on 8th Avenue South and lead officers on a car chase.

“He had his finger on the trigger. I remember seeing a flash of red light which I thought he had shot me, but it was the laser I guess,” said Goetzinger.
Police were able to track down Smith with the help of Goetzinger's cell phone, which was in her SUV.
Goetzinger recently downloaded the “Find My Friends” app to track her teenage daughter in the event she was ever in trouble.
She told News 2 Tuesday she never would have thought the app would help her out of a dangerous situation.
Through the app, Goetzinger's daughter kept police informed of the whereabouts of her mother's phone so police could following Smith.

“My daughter immediately got her phone and went to the app and was able to track it which is a GPS and help the police locate the area he was in,” said Goetzinger.
Authorities eventually caught up with him on Elliston Place where five Metro police opened fire on Smith after they say he pointed a gun at them.

Police said Smith was running from the law after pointing a gun at a detective while being questioned for a car burglary.

At the time of Friday night's crimes, Smith was wanted on two outstanding warrants in Davidson County and one in Williamson County.
