Of the hundreds of players participating and trying to make a good impression Saturday at the NFL Combine, one guy stood above the rest in the media room: Missouri Linebacker Michael Sam.
The first openly gay draft prospect spent 13 minutes at the podium fielding all types of questions.
Sam said that he has received overwhelming support since announcing two weeks ago to the world that he is gay.
He went on to own the room for the remainder of his press conference, cracking jokes and throwing barbs back at the assembled media.
Moving forward, Sam said, his main focus is on football and trying to impress NFL general managers and scouts.
Expected to be drafted between the third and fourth rounds, if the linebacker performs similar in the on-field drills as he did in the media room, Sam could see his stock rise at the end of the combine.
