The Columbia Police Department is searching for the person or persons responsible for firing shots into a home, nearly hitting children who were sleeping inside.
Investigators were called to the home located in the 100 block of Elaine Drive around 4 a.m. Sunday.
Sonya Caldwell, 41, was sitting in bed when she said she heard three loud bangs in front of her home.
“I heard three gunshots, it sounded like they were coming from my yard real close like they were hitting something, so I just hit the floor,” said Caldwell.
She said she got down and yelled for others in the next room to get down too.
Her 19-year-old daughter, 11-year-old goddaughter and 11-year-old niece were sleeping there and did not hear the gunfire.
Caldwell said one of the bullets traveled through her daughter's bedroom, coming just three inches from her niece's head.
Caldwell called 911.
“There were shots fired over this way on my street, please come,” the mother told the dispatcher.
Investigators told News 2 no other homes in the neighborhood were hit.
It is possible Caldwell's home was targeted but the investigation is ongoing.
