A Smyrna woman is dead after her boyfriend's brother shot and killed her before taking his own life.
The murder-suicide happened Thursday night at Kayleigh Dupont's Village Lake Drive townhome.
Officers responded to the home off Jefferson Pike around 7:20 p.m. after receiving a 911 hang-up call.
After finding Dupont's two-year-old son alone downstairs, they searched the home.
Police then found Dupont, 28, and Justin Bennett shot to death in a locked upstairs bathroom.
An investigation revealed Bennett, 32, of Murfreesboro, entered the home sometime Thursday evening by kicking in the front door.
He confronted Dupont and shot her to death before turning the gun on himself.
Smyrna Police Chief Kevin Arnold told News 2 the shooting is believed to be the result of a domestic altercation involving Bennett's father, Timothy, who also lived at the home. He was arrested for domestic assault two days earlier.
“There was a domestic situation there on the 14th of January where the grandfather of Kayleigh's child was arrested for domestic assault,” Chief Arnold explained. “Unfortunately, this all stemmed from that.”
He continued, “For whatever reason, at this point and time we don't know why, Justin felt the need to go in and take someone else's life and his own.”
Timothy Bennett's whereabouts Thursday night were not immediately known.
Dupont's live-in boyfriend was at work when the shooting occurred.
The child was placed in protective custody and has since been returned to his father, Dupont's boyfriend.
The investigation is ongoing.
Police said they planned to continue their investigation by talking with neighbors and friends and enhancing the currently inaudible 911 call in an effort to obtain more information about the shooting.
