Davidson County District Attorney Torry Johnson announced on Wednesday he will not seek re-election.

Johnson was first appointed to the post by then-Governor Ned McWherter and has won re-election three additional times.

“This has been a difficult decision, and not one made lightly and without a lot of consideration,” Johnson said in a release. “For a lawyer, there is no better job than to go to work every day with just one purpose; to do the right thing by pursuing guilt while protecting innocence.”

Johnson has held the position of district attorney for more than 26 years.

He said he plans to “explore other opportunities,” but has no immediate plans when his term expires in August.
