What started as a tip from a concerned citizen to the sheriff on January 2 has grown into a multi-state, multi-jurisdictional investigation into stolen ATVs.
Giles County Sheriff Kyle Helton told Nashville's News 2 thieves have stolen property before reselling it on Craigslist or trading it with other members of the alleged theft ring, dubbed the “Barter Thieves” for the past two years.
“One group would steal something; they would make a deal with each other. Then the other group would steal something and they would trade it,” explained Helton.
According to Helton, victims have been identified locally from Brentwood and Maury County and all the way to Alabama and Georgia.
So far, 12 ATV's have been recovered.
Ten suspects, including Anthony Gann, Jerry Hicks, Michael Hasting, Logan Bivins, Richard Lynn, Dylan Sanders, Michael Vanest, Cameron Calkins, Troy Storey and Richard Thompson, have all been arrested.
Additional arrests are expected.
Helton estimates the recovered property is valued at $100,000, but that estimation is expected to rise as the investigation continues.
The FBI is assisting in the investigation.
